When you look at human history, you will notice that every culture and group of people have had some sort of religious beliefs. Some cultures embraced the concept of many gods and some only believed in one god. Whatever these various cultures religious beliefs, they all believed in a supreme being or beings.
When we look at today’s society, we see that some people are extremely bent on removing all reference to religion or at least force it into the closets of individuals. As if restricting God to people’s closets at best, to a complete removal of all references to God, will somehow or another cause God (or at least the concept of God) to cease existence.
However, modern man with all his technology and knowledge cannot cause the death of God any more than a person can hold back the tide with a broomstick. So what is behind this denial of God and why will some people go to great lengths to cease all mention of God? In order to answer this question we need to look to the Bible for the answer.
In the opening Book of Genesis we read “In the beginning God”. We find that the opening statement in Genesis does not question God’s existence. We also find in that opening statement that there is one God; not many as some cultures believed. This one opening statement sets the foundations for the entire Bible. If this verse had read “In the beginning the gods” or “In the beginning something happened” or even still “In the beginning we think god”, then the entire Bible would fall apart. This one statement is probably one of the most important verses, if not the most important verse, in the entire Bible.
Genesis’ opening statement challenges people to believe. It gives no one room to not believe in God. This one statement “In the beginning God”, states as fact that God exists. Thus, this one statement is where many have spent their time trying to disprove or at least relegate to individuals’ closets.
Genesis goes on further to state that “God created the heavens and earth” and all that is therein. This statement further elaborates that not only does God exist but that He is the creator of the universe.
Thus the full opening statement in Genesis reads “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. When these “two” statements are read together, as they should be, one realizes that the opening verse in the Bible immediately challenges one’s concepts about the universe, its origin and who brought it into existence. So it is no wonder why many fight so hard to eliminate or at least limit the mention of God and the role He plays in people’s lives. For if they acknowledge the existence of God, then they also must admit that they have to give an account to a supreme being, e.g. God.
Furthermore, by acknowledging God as creator (and by default that He exists) one realizes that we have to live our lives in accordance to His will. For within that opening verse one realizes that he did not bring anything into this world nor could he create anything to add to God’s universe, including his own life. Thus, he knows that he owes God his very life.
So what is the answer to people who struggle to eliminate God from society? The answer is simple, they are made in the image of God, as are all of humanity, thus these people are worthy of our love for somewhere within them is God’s image. We need to tell these people about how much God loves them. God’s love is so great that he sent Jesus, His only begotten son, to die on a cross for our sins. Jesus rose from the dead to set us free from sin and death so that we may confidently approach the creator and Father of us all, God.
