Legalization of Vice

Down through the years governments and societies have had to deal with vice. Some have outlawed vice. Still others have tolerated vice even though it was outlawed. Finally, some governments have legalized vice. Regardless of which path was taken, all governments and societies have had to answer questions about what to do with vice.

We are no different today than those who have gone before us. Nowadays we still debate on whether or not certain vices should be legalized or not. Examples of vice being debated are: the legalization of drugs in particular marijuana, gambling, pornography and even prostitution at times.

To be sure we legalize, outlaw and tolerate vice today in many different forms. It is okay to smoke or chew tobacco even though it is bad for one’s health while marijuana use for medical purposes is debated. Alcohol can destroy a person’s health and yet studies come out claiming that moderate use can be helpful to one’s health. Pornography is tolerated as long as it is not deemed “obscene” as defined by society; yet we want sexual freedom. We play lotteries and denounce casinos.

Yes, when it comes to vice and it’s various manifestations, we are indeed hypercritics.

Arguments for outlawing vice are based upon morals, ethics and religion. Arguments for legalizing vice are based upon individual freedom and money. Both sides are deeply entrenched and will not budge a single inch. However, I believe both sides avoid the bigger issue surrounding vice, which is:

VICE IS SPIRITUAL WARFARE.

Yes, you have read correctly, vice is spiritual warfare. The problem with vice and it’s many manifestations is that it ensnares people into a way of life that is unfulfilling. Vice uses glamour to get people to try it. Vice tries to convince people that having a vice will not harm you. Indeed having a vice will make you cool, make you man, open up new worlds for you, make you rich and so forth.

Once vice gets you to try it, it makes sure that first few experiences are pleasurable. Vice wants to get you hooked on it so vice makes it easy to come back again and again. Vice will make as many pleasurable experiences as it takes to get you hooked. So vice makes sure that after every experience you are left with wanting more.

Wanting more vice becomes an obsession. You begin to find ways to partake of the vice you like. You find that when you are with vice you are okay, life is good and that you find a sense of peace. However, what you don’t see is how vice it taking over your life. Vice is subtle, it lures you into a false sense of security that you can handle it, that you are benefiting from it and that you know what you are doing.

Before you know it, vice has a hold of you. You are now addicted. The pleasures you once had no longer satisfy you. You find that you need to go deeper and deeper into vice to even come close to any form of pleasure and even then it is very short lived. And yet, this is not the worst of it. The worst is yet to come.

Vice has lured you into its web of lies and deceit. You have now traveled the road from curiosity, to obsession and finally to addiction. The pleasures you once experienced are gone. But vice has such a hold on you that you willing travel deeper into the pit lead on by vice’s promises of better pleasures yet to come. After all vice did tell you that it would be pleasurable, that it would make you cool and that it would fulfill you. At first vice did keep its promises, but now vice has you firmly in its grasp and will begin to destroy you.

You try and fight back but you find that you are unable to resist vice. You try to stop doing vice, but your body, mind, and emotions crave more vice. You give in because you are weak even though you are now beginning to see through the lies and deceit of vice. Your willpower is not enough. You seek help but find that all the help offers is more “willpower”. You seek counseling, only to find that the counselor can only expose the reasons you turned to vice to begin with and that you still need more willpower.

Sometime ago you had your whole life to live but now death becomes an attractive option. Oh what you would not give to be rid of your vice. You would even die to be rid of your vice. But what you may fail to see is that is exactly what vice wants. Vice wants you dead. Vice doesn’t even care if you are buried, just so long as you are dead.

You see what vice doesn’t tell you at the beginning is that you will lose your soul, your identity and your purpose for living. Vice would demand everything from you and give you nothing in return. For if vice told you at the beginning that you would lose you soul, identity and purpose, you probably would have flee from vice. So instead of telling you the truth upfront, vice uses lies and deceit to capture you.

Vice works hard to ensnare you. Once ensnared, vice seeks ways to destroy you so completely that you will despair of life itself. Vice offers no hope, love, peace, joy or anything else that is considered good.

Your only way out of vice it through a man named Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Only Jesus can heal the reasons you turned to vice. Only Jesus can provide you with the Holy Spirit to give you strength to resist vice. Only Jesus can give you the hope, love, peace and joy that you seek.

So when governments and societies start debating whether vice should be legalized, outlawed or tolerated remember VICE IS SPIRITUAL WARFARE and the outcome will affect the lives of individuals and a nation. So fight accordingly.
